More attuned to the rhythms of Naruse or Kinoshita than Scorcese or Spielberg, The Harimaya Bridge is an intriguing surprise from such a young, unknown filmmaker, using simply told moments to capture the beauty of a mountainous Japanese village, or the sorrow of those whose lives cross paths there. Directed by Roland Vranik, it’s alternately mesmerizing and maddening.
Press screenings look more and more like carousels for the smart and poor, turning round in the wafting carnival aroma of one more free screening in the morning, one more free cup of coffee, one more chance to dent and be dented. Whether big-budget Asian genre films or small-scale American independents, HIFF once again offered many things to many people, but it was the local work that truly shone.

The Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival (Oct. 9-19) prides itself on being a bridge between “East and West,” but this year’s edition found its greatest strength in films even closer to home (or as close to home as Hawaii can get, considering it’s the most geographically isolated populated landmass in the world). No longer content to be a mere “bridge” between East and West, this year’s festival promised to highlight the Pacific Islands as a creative locale in its own right. Somewhat skirting the limelight prior to the spring 2009 release of Sugar, directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden brought their newest indie drama to the fest.

Having expressed my admiration for Venice 66, I must add that I have seen the most extraordinary fusion imaginable of art and film in Peter Greenaway’s The Wedding At Cana ongoing project that will eventually illuminate nine great paintings, a surprise screening that I saw twice. The official sections included Venezia 66, whose jury, headed by Ang Lee, awarded the Golden Lion for Best Film to Lebanon, based on Israel’s invasion of that country in 1982, in which the director, Samuel Maoz, participated as a young soldier, and for the past 20 years has been trying to come to terms with the experience. He is the third Israeli director to deal with the horrors of that war, after Ari Folman and Joseph Cedar , and can expect a mixed reception in Israel. Along with his earlier film Take Out (co-directed with Shih-Ching Tsou), Baker is creating a visual history of New York City that will one day stand with Scorcese’s efforts; Baker’s, however, will be recognized as far more immediate, and far more realistic. I think any filmmaker starts by producing work with the sincerity and innocence that are driven by the love of storytelling. After accidentally killing an unarmed Black man when his gun fires off through an apartment wall, a young Chinese American cop deals with his guilt and begins to unravel as he navigates the charged and complicated worlds of media, justice and racial politics in modern-day New York. The film, drawn from an actual event in Brooklyn, explores systemic racism. What should books become in the digital age now that they’re freed from the burden of fulfilling tasks like encyclopedias and the Yellow Pages?

“AloneTogether” is a dance of classic beauty, athleticism and touching poignancy; it’s also a work of art created in the time of pandemic. “AloneTogether” is a dance inspired by the limitations of isolation and possibilities of connecting without touch. From start to finish, the musical score, the choreography and the editing took less than one month. This is a short 15 minute documentary released on the 20th anniversary of the fire that burned down Doner’s building and forced a restructuring of the business. Features interviews of employees that worked there at the time, news footage, and found footage filmed immediately following the fire. This was aired for an agency-wide event that was featured on local news. This was a project I produced at Doner outside of work with some members of the production team.
Dreamachine International Film Festival
Meet real Flat Earthers, a small but growing contingent of people who firmly believe in a conspiracy to suppress the truth that the Earth is flat. Some of the entries are full-fledged films, whether shorts or features. There are several dozen selections in all, and later this week I should learn whether I’ll add an award to the collection « Stand Tall! », the sweet-natured tale of 16-foot showroom headliner Colleen Cossitt, has earned. A four-part mini web series exploring #MeToo in its complex, non-western contex, based on interviews with sexual harassment college survivors from different parts of South Asia . I’m interested in visual storytelling as a means of reaching audiences, without the constraints of geographical barriers, as well as a vehicle to narrate stories we may otherwise never hear.

International cinema is alive and well in Palm Springs, and if I didn’t always understand exactly what I’d seen, that was OK too.
